A Dazzling Intersection of Art and Science: The Grand Prize Winner of UChicago’s ‘Science as Art’ Contest

Announcement of Winners in the 2024 UChicago Science as Art Competition

The University of Chicago has announced the winners of its 2024 “Science as Art” contest, which showcases innovative scientific research from members of the UChicago community. With over 60 entries submitted by undergraduates, graduate students, staff, alumni, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty members, the contest featured a diverse range of images that not only demonstrated the pursuit of knowledge but also highlighted the beauty of intellectual exploration.

One of the standout submissions was Ph.D. student Sam Everett’s piece titled “Peculiar Dynamics”. In his description of his work, Everett explained how he used computer programs to illustrate mathematical phenomena, allowing for a deeper understanding of the object he was studying. Through a simulation of a discrete dynamical system of the plane, Everett captured an image that displayed dynamics that appeared almost “organic” and “chaotic” around the origin. This intersection of art and science in a captivating way earned him the grand prize for his submission.
