24-Year-Old Sargent’s Injury Puts His Place in US Copa America Squad in Doubt

Josh Sargent sidelined for friendly against Colombia, could also miss Copa America

In the upcoming friendly match against Colombia on June 8, 2024, 24-year-old forward Joshua Sargent from O’Fallon, Missouri may not be able to compete. Sargent, who scored an impressive 16 goals in 26 league games with Norwich in England’s League Championship, faced challenges at the end of the season due to foot swelling.

United States coach Gregg Berhalter has revealed that Sargent will miss the Colombia game and his availability for the Brazil game is also uncertain. A decision will be made on whether Sargent will be included in the Copa America roster based on his fitness. The U.S. team is set to face Brazil after Colombia in a series of matches.

The team’s schedule includes first-round matches against Bolivia, Panama, and Uruguay in the Copa America tournament. In addition to Sargent, the U.S. roster includes forwards Folarin Balogun, Ricardo Pepi, and Haji Wright who will be ready to step in if needed. The team is focused on preparing for the upcoming matches and making decisions based on players’ health and readiness.

In recent years, Sargent has become one of the most promising young players in American soccer. He began his career with St Louis FC before moving to Werder Bremen in Germany where he played for two seasons before joining Norwich City in England’s Championship last summer.

Sargent’s performance with Norwich City has been nothing short of impressive as he scored an impressive 16 goals in just 26 league games.

However, at the end of the season, Sargent faced challenges due to foot swelling which may prevent him from competing against Colombia.

If Sargent is unable to play against Colombia or Brazil, he will likely miss out on playing in his first major international tournament with the US national team.

It remains to be seen if he will recover from his injury and make it onto the roster for Copa America.
