2019 French Legislative Elections: A Tense Contest Between Extreme Right and Left

National Group Urges Other Parties to Urge Calm Amid Protests Against Extreme Right-wing Movements

The upcoming legislative elections in France are shaping up to be a highly contested and consequential cycle, with the country’s political landscape shifting. Following the National Rally’s resounding victory in the European elections, President Emmanuel Macron called for early elections, leading to protests against the extreme right.

Jordan Bardella, president of the National Group, has called for calm on Friday ahead of the tense weekend in France. Bardella urged all political parties, including those on the left, to advocate for peace. He is running as a candidate for prime minister for the National Group in the upcoming legislative elections set for June 30 and July 7.

The left-wing parties have reached an agreement to participate together in the upcoming elections, while the center-right Les Republicains is facing internal strife over potentially aligning with Le Pen. Polls currently predict a victory for the National Group, but the left-wing parties, forming the New Popular Front, have gained ground and are trailing Le Pen by only three percentage points.

Bardella’s appeal for calm and unity among political parties underscores the tense political climate in France following the European elections and ahead of the upcoming legislative elections. The extreme right and left are gaining momentum, setting up a highly contested election cycle that will determine France’s future direction.
