125 Years of Tradition: John Truzzolino and the Legacy of Butte’s Famous Pasties and Tamales

Butte’s iconic Truzzolino Tamales business up for sale with a twist

For over 125 years, Truzzolino’s in Butte has been a beloved local institution, known for their famous pasties and world-renowned Italian/Mexican tamales. It all began in 1896 when John’s great-grandfather Vincent started the business in Butte. Many Italian immigrants came to the U.S. via South America and brought with them their own style of tamale, which has remained the same for decades. The store uses the same chili powder for 90 years, a testament to their commitment to tradition.

Loyal customers have kept Truzzolino’s in business for over a century, including Linda Lowney who enjoys getting pasties and tamale pies as part of old-time Butte traditions. John and his wife Janel plan to retire once they sell the business, but they are adamant that the quality and tradition of Truzzolino’s be maintained by the new owner. Long-time employee Cary Sprinkle considers the Truzzolino family to be his own and takes pride in working for the business.

John plans to work with the new owner to ensure a smooth transition, but admits he is not entirely ready to walk away. His focus is on planning for the future, as unexpected changes can always arise. Despite his impending retirement, John’s dedication to Truzzolino’s and its legacy remains strong, ensuring that this beloved institution will continue to thrive for generations to come.
