100-Year-Old Veteran Celebrates with Phillies at Special Salute to Service Event

I never expected this: Phillie Phanatic surprises World War II veteran on his 100th birthday

Paul Trumbetas, a World War II veteran and avid Phillies fan, turned 100 in style with a special birthday celebration at the Southeastern Veterans’ Center in Spring City, Chester County. The event was organized by his daughter, Denise Selzer, who reached out to the team for help.

The celebration was part of the Phillies Salute to Service program and featured military vehicles and the beloved mascot, the Phillie Phanatic. Trumbetas was honored for his service to his country and surrounded by loved ones during the festivities.

Trumbetas, a devoted fan of many Philadelphia sports teams including the Eagles, 76ers, and Flyers, was thrilled by the surprise party thrown in his honor. Along with his wife Barbara and youngest daughter, Fran Griffith, he enjoyed an honor guard performance, cake cutting ceremony, and even an ice cream truck.

As a special thank you for their support and participation in the celebration, Phillies legend Mickey Morandini presented Trumbetas with a ball that he will throw for the first pitch at a Phillies game.

Griffith expressed her gratitude for the incredible turnout from family members and friends as well as members of the community who came together to celebrate her father’s milestone birthday. Trumbetas shared his excitement by encouraging the Phillies on game day saying “Keep hitting.” As they said their goodbyes at night’s end, Trumbetas cherished memories from this once-in-a-lifetime event that truly made his 100th birthday one to remember.
